Help abolish the death penalty in these six states

Interested in helping abolish the death penalty in other states? The National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty just issued these action alerts:

  • As Illinois Governor Pat Quinn considers SB 3539, the bill to repeal the death penalty in that state, please call him (again) to ask that he sign it. You can call him at his Springfield office at 217-782-6830 and also at his Chicago office at 312-814-2121. After you call, please take action at ncadp.org/IllinoisAction to ask the governor to sign the bill and to thank the champions of abolition in Illinois, Rep. Karen Yarbrough and Sen. Kwame Raoul.
  • This evening in Maryland, it’s Lobby Night at the State Capitol in Annapolis for Maryland Citizens Against State Executions (MDCASE), and tomorrow is the Victims’ Town Hall Meeting in Prince George’s County. On Thursday, MDCASE will hold a press conference to launch its death penalty repeal bill in the new legislature. Click here for more information and to sign up with MDCASE.
  • Tuesday morning (Feb. 8, 2011) in Montana will be the first hearing on this year’s Montana repeal bill. Click here to listen live to a tremendous lineup of experts and voices of experience, including a warden who executed people, a death row survivor, murder victim family members, and more. The hearing will be in Senate Judiciary (Room 303) and is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. MST. These hearings don’t always start right on time – there will not be an active link there until the hearing actually begins. You may have to refresh your browser to have it pop up. • In Connecticut on Wednesday, the Connecticut Network to Abolish the Death Penalty will launch its campaign with a press conference led by murder victim family members calling for an end to the death penalty. Click here for the details and to get involved.
  • Also on Wednesday, the Washington Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty will be out in force at the state capitol for a hearing on SB 5456, a bill to repeal the death penalty in that state. Visit WCADP for more info and to sign up for its update list.
  • The Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty is gearing up for its annual conference on February 19, where NCADP’s own Sachin Chheda will be a featured presenter, and it is in the midst of an unusual clemency campaign for a prisoner scheduled to be killed February 22. Click the links for details.
