Murder victims’ families in Illinois relieved about that state’s death penalty ban

From Illinois’s Aura Beacon News‘s “Families relieved by death penalty decision

[Kane County State’s Attorney Joe] McMahon said most of the [murder victims’] families were relieved when the death penalty ban passed. Even if they supported it, they were glad to have the uncertainty removed. For years, families hung on the latest swing.

Removing the death penalty as a possible sentence will also likely speed up the court processes.

McMahon said he stressed to the families that his office is still committed to pursuing long sentences for all the former death cases.

“We can do our job just fine without the death penalty,” McMahon said.
